EAP 6000 is designed to acclimate international students to the communicative expectations of graduate school at the George Washington University. It creates a safe classroom space where students gain confidence and communicative fluency in interacting with their professor and peers.
Graduate Advising Upon admission to the program, each student is assigned an initial advisor; this reflects our commitment to providing the support necessary for our students to succeed. Master's students work with an initial advisor throughout their studies; PhD students work with an initial advisor until they select a dissertation advisor.
With a core of 15 full-time and 20 affiliated faculty members, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary cultural analysis with approaches from anthropology, architectural history, art history, English, folklife, geography, media studies, history, performance studies and political theory.
These interdisciplinary fields pull from topics in American Studies and in related disciplines such as art history, English, history and political science. Students develop research agendas early in their studies through participation in seminars and workshops, often drawing on Washington, D.C.-based archives and research institutes.

Speed Thesis: 3MT Comes to Columbian College. Columbian College PhD students stepped up to a speed-challenge in the college’s first Three Minute Thesis Competition. he winner of this year’s inaugural competition was Elizabeth Pertner, a PhD candidate in political science.
Students in the PhD program can earn either an Master of Science (MS) in Economics or a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Economics degree while pursuing the PhD degree. Students in good standing may apply for the MS once they have completed the 30 required credits: ECON 8301, 8305 and 8375; two courses chosen from 8302, 8306 and 8376; and five 8000-level economics courses.
